Matthew Johnston was born in Jerseyville, Illinois and raised in Rota, Spain and Orange Park, Florida. Following a four year enlistment in the United States Navy, where he served as a member of the United States Navy Ceremonial Guard in Washington, DC and in the Navigation Department on board the U.S.S. Seattle (AOE-3), Matt settled in the DC area where he attended the University of Maryland, College Park. At Maryland, he received his B.A. in Government and Politics, cum laude, in 1997. Matt received his J.D., cum laude, from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in 2005, where he served as Note & Comment Editor for the CommLaw Conspectus: Journal of Communications Law.
Prior to joining Gordon & Simmons, Matt worked as a staff lobbyist for the Health Insurance Association of America and as a government relations and campaign finance compliance consultant for several Fortune 500 clients. Matt’s practice focuses on general litigation.
Matt lives in Frederick with the women in his life, his wife, two daughters and a (female) dog. Matt is a U.S. Soccer Federation Licensed Referee and licensed to referee games for the Maryland Public Secondary Schools. When not with his family, Matt can usually be found watching a soccer game, reading or listening to music.
