Joey Leavitt

Joey is originally from South Florida, having been raised there since he was 5 years old. After earning his Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in Economics and Philosophy from Florida State University, he went on to obtain his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Florida State University College of Law. He is currently licensed to practice law in Maryland and Florida.

While in law school, Joey was an Executive Editor with the Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law, as well as an active member of the Mock Trial Team, winning a National Mock Trial Championship in Buffalo, New York.

Joey’s first employment after law school was with the Public Defender’s Office in Brevard County, Florida. During his time as an Assistant Public Defender, Joey represented indigent clients charged with every criminal offense in Florida other than First Degree Murder, and he acted as lead counsel or second-chair in 15 criminal jury trials. Joey has also zealously advocated for his clients in countless motion hearings.

Joey is looking forward to the opportunity to apply his litigation skills to Gordon & Simmons’ civil and commercial practice. To this end, since starting with the firm in October of 2021, Joey has already assisted others at the firm in complex partnership/business disputes, construction, fraud, and other tort-related cases, a loan/guaranty dispute, and a few Landlord/Tenant matters.

Joey’s wife, Sarah, is a Maryland native. After their marriage in August 2021, Joey and Sarah moved to Maryland with the goal of starting their family. Joey is happy to trade the oppressive Florida heat for Maryland seasons, even if it means he’s a little farther from the beach.

Outside of work, Joey enjoys performing in community theater productions with his wife, playing basketball, and training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
